What Is Problem Gambling and Do I Have a Gambling Problem?
Understanding Problem Gambling and Where to Get Help
Problem gambling refers to a difficult and often overwhelming urge to continue gambling, even when it starts to cause harm in your life. It can impact anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstances. When left unaddressed, problem gambling can lead to serious financial difficulties, strained relationships, and negative effects on overall well-being. If you’re feeling out of control or concerned about your gambling, please know you are not alone—support is available to help you regain balance and move forward.
Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
- I see gaming as a way to make money I don’t have.
- I’m betting with funds I can’t afford to lose.
- I feel gambling interferes with my daily life.
- I am recovering from another addiction.
- I gamble to escape worries or stress.
- I can’t stop betting even though I want to.
Questions to Help Assess Problem Gambling
If you’re unsure whether gambling might be a problem for you, ask yourself:
- Do you skip work or neglect responsibilities to gamble?
- Have you lied about how much time or money you spend gambling?
- Have others expressed concern about your gambling?
- Have you borrowed, stolen, or lied to get money for gambling?
- Have you lost interest in family, friends, or hobbies?
- After losing, do you feel the need to win back your losses immediately?
- Do frustration or disappointment trigger your gambling?
- Do you feel depressed or suicidal because of your gambling?
The more you answer 'Yes' to these questions, the greater the chance that gambling may be a serious problem for you.
